Cooper SH has scooped a prestigious industry award for the outstanding support the company has provided to the operators of one of the country’s highest profile inter-modal terminals.
The ABP Hams Hall Rail Freight Terminal based near Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham is arguably one of the busiest of its type in the UK, and judges at the Rail Freight Group Awards 2013 were impressed with the way Cooper had developed a maintenance regime to boost uptime and keep train and road-going vehicle turnarounds to a minimum.
After picking up top honours in the Support Service Provider category at the awards, David Cooper, Managing Director of Cooper SH, explained: “The terminal needed a service provider with the engineering capability to maintain a mixed fleet of machines for a continually growing range of applications.
“We are delighted that the solution we provided has been recognised within the industry and we’re looking to continuing our partnership with ABP.”
Based on a fixed price maintenance agreement, Cooper developed a plan that includes preventative servicing in the terminal’s quiet periods from 22:00hrs to 05:00hrs when just three of the fleet of eight machines are working.
“Weekly health checks of every machine are also undertaken on Sunday nights to ensure all machines are ready for 05:00 Monday morning,” David continued. “During the week, a second engineer works a day-shift to provide an immediate response for any running repairs – keeping downtime to a minimum.”
Cooper SH was presented the award during a special event at the Shendish Manor Hotel in Hertfordshire where the company was also recognised in the Environmental Innovation category. The company was shortlisted for the award after announcing the launch of a new hybrid reach stacker from Konecranes to its product range.
“The awards showcase excellence in the industry and we were delighted that our products and services were so well represented,” David added.
