Long-Term Materials Handling Solution for Armitt Group

When one of London’s busiest steel-handling, rail connected terminals needed a long-term materials handling solution to accommodate time-critical operations, Cooper SH responded with an innovative rental solution.

The Armitt Group of companies have been trading since 1950, offering professional UK Shipping, Freight Forwarding, Global Logistics, Project Handling, Shipbroking, Chartering and Shipping Agency Services, along with being a specialist supplier of marine fuel and lubricants for the UK and Ireland.

The Groups success has been based on providing high professional standards and emphasis on quality and customer service, with highly skilled, experienced and professional teams supporting all operations  throughout the Group, which operates across the UK, with dedicated sites in the North West, South Wales, Holyhead, London Thamesport, and Scotland. Whilst offering substantial experience and knowledge in the handling of steel products and bulk chemicals, the Armitt Group operate across a broad sector of products.

AMT South is the Groups Southern based Purpose Built Steel Handling Rail Connected Multi Modal Terminal ideally located within London Thamesport, to service London, the South East Region and rail routes to the Midlands and the North/North West, along with routes to mainland Europe.  When they contacted Cooper Specialised Handling with a specific materials handling solution, we were able to respond to the challenge set before us.

With over 4 million pounds invested and the UK’s widest “Specialised fleet”, Cooper Handling Group and a rental fleet that has been handpicked to ensure a young age profile with associated hours ensuring high levels of up-time, we were able to match Armitt’s requirement with a rental solution that was optimised specifically for their business.  The machine supplied for their operations, a Konecranes 16-1200B heavy-duty forklift, is primarily used for long products or to support vessel discharge operations with boom/probe attached and was the perfect fit for their long-term hire requirement. An SMV 20-1200B machine was also supplied on short-term hire in addition to the long-term hire of the 16-1200B in combination with a dedicated service contract with engineering support.

Darren Constantine, Terminal Manager at Thamesport commented “Coopers have supported and supplemented our MHE requirements for material handling for Steel Coil and long products from vessel to quay – through our terminal  – to rail wagon and road vehicle for steel products with a lift capacity up to 32,000 Tonnes by overhead gantry crane and forklift truck operation.”

Darren continues, “Coopers have also proved to be an ideal partner for response to non-steel related material handling projects requirements.”
