Metals recycling supplies a major worldwide industry. Despite an economic slowdown and a decline in the steel industry, manufacturing of metals continues to contribute significant value to the UK economy. Last year, 10 million tonnes of metal were recycled in the UK. As the UK produces considerably more scrap than is required for domestic markets, 90 percent was exported worldwide. In fact, the UK is one of the five largest metal scrap exporting countries in the world. According to the British Metal Recycling Association (BMRA), 2019 figures show at least fifteen-thousand individuals are currently employed in the UK scrap industry with a turnover of over £7 billion pounds. Cooper Specialised Handling is a family run business which celebrated 20 years in the industry in 2018 and has seen us become one of the largest independent, solely owned port supply equipment providers in the UK. With our customised solutions, experience and extensive portfolio, we are proud to have been accepted into the BMRA as a service member to offer optimised solutions to the scrap handling industry.
Scrap is known to be one of the toughest materials in industrial material handling. Requiring both sturdiness and strength, scrap handling sets huge challenges for the machinery. This is a sentiment not lost on our current customers within the industry.
Mantsinen hydraulic cranes have been prevalent in scrap handling applications for over a decade within the UK from TATA Steel to EMR, working thousands of hours per year in the harshest of applications. Supporting the Mantsinen product for these customers has seen a natural progression for us to now embrace the scrap industry and set up a dedicated scrap handling division.
Carl Hodges, Sales Manager commented, “We are excited with the new machines from our OEM’s, dedicated to scrap applications.” Carl continues, “Cooper SH has a history of providing cost-effective, long term handling solutions to the materials handling market where we can rightly claim to be the number one specialist supplier to the industry. It is our intention to deliver the same quality equipment and high levels of knowledge and customer service to the scrap industry that we have to the port industry.”
